Lande, Yoysef
1905–
He was born in the village of Tatarbunary, Bessarabia. After WWI he made his way to Brazil. He was a member of the Jewish cultural association and library in São Paolo. He was also active in the local secular Jewish supplementary school and in the dramatic circle connected to the library.
From the 1930s he published poetry and stories in: Unzer Shtime (Our Voice), Velt-Shpigl (World Mirror), and Funken (Sparks)—in the last of these he published a fragment of his longer story “Maratibaras”—all in Rio de Janeiro; Haynt (Today) and IKUF-Bleter (Pages from IKUF [Jewish Cultural Association]) in Buenos Aires; Yidishe Kultur (Jewish Culture) and Frayhayt (Freedom) in New York; Yidishe Shriftn (Yiddish Writings) and Folksshtime (Voice of the People) in Warsaw; and IKUF-Bleter, Gezelshaft-Literarisher Zhurnal (Pages from IKUF, Community-Literary Journal) in Bucharest; among others.
In book form: Likhtike Kayorn, Lider un Dertseylungen (Bright Dawns, Poems and Stories), with a few words about Lande’s life and work by Shimen Rodal (Rio de Janeiro, 1959), 162 pp.
He was last living in São Paolo [a/o 1961].
